Humiliating a person is like murdering her, and those who have yelled or muttered rude comments at me are in violation.

That being said, the halakhah requires a visitor to conform to local minhag (custom) in public, and to preserve her own community or family minhag in private. That is what I did when I first arrived here. Now that I no longer feel a visitor in Jerusalem, I publicly adhere to the customs of my local community, namely the community of Masorati (i.e. Conservative) Jews in Israel.
Ilana G-GAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839524095392987959.post-21501936226211963682011-02-02T21:25:08.969-08:002011-02-02T21:25:08.969-08:00Thanks to the anonymous reader for your comment.

But eventually I realized the hat was the wrong symbol for me. The Jewish tradition of covering our heads is quite old. For males, the meaning of the tradition is expressed by the Yiddish name "Yalmuke", or "Yirah D'malka" -- Fear of the King. Jewish men wear a kippah to remember who is above them. Jewish women? Despite modern attempts to recast marriage as a relationship between equal partners with differing roles, an honest reading of traditional rabbinic sources reveals that Jewish women also covered their heads to remember who was most immediately above them -- and it wasn't God.
Ilana G-GAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839524095392987959.post-29222704149284966562011-01-29T23:59:39.135-08:002011-01-29T23:59:39.135-08:00You don't actually explain why you where a kip...You don't actually explain why you where a kippah to begin with and don't wear a hat as required.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2839524095392987959.post-4469676296098448822011-01-27T12:48:44.177-08:002011-01-27T12:48:44.177-08:00So, Rabbi Ilana, what can halachah tell us about t...So, Rabbi Ilana, what can halachah tell us about this question?
